If you are a homeowner and you have drywall in your house then knowing how to repair those little ” life happens” moments is vital to protecting your investment. The proper way to repair a hole is to make sure it is clean , dry, and still strong. If not then you should cut a larger hole in the drywall before starting to repair it.

The repair process is as easy as having a little scrap wood and a few screws, a piece of drywall and some drywall compound. Any hole can be repaired by cutting a piece of drywall to fit the hole but in this video I will demonstrate the technique known as the California patch. This technique allows you to fill the hole and tape the edges in 11 step and allows for a faster repair time and a smoother finish so no one will ever know that there is a patch after you are done.

One vital key to success in repairing your drywall is to cut away any beveled edge before measuring to fit the hole. This will ensure that the drywall patch can be filled with drywall compound in 2 easy steps.

Once you are finished applying the drywall compound you can sand with a dry or wet sponge. I suggest that to get the best result a dry sanding sponge is the best way to go. Prime the patch with drywall primer and then use a light to make sure that there are no shadows. If there are fill in the shadows so that the drywall repair is no longer visible.

repeat the priming step and then for best results paint the entire wall or ceiling after having first painted the patch area and let it sit for at least 20 minutes.

Warning, do not tell your friends you have done this by yourself or they will be asking you to fix all of their houses as well. Cheers!
